What does Kowakan Mean?

“Ko wakan” is a Lakota phrase meaning "Place of the Almighty" and is the name of the base camp located in the Superior National Forest east of Ely, Minnesota. Located on Section 12 Lake, Kowakan is the only site on the lake and is comprised of 40 acres of land bordering the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
