Who uses Kowakan?
Kowakan is a base for the beginning and end of most trips. Kowakan is where participants will gather prior to a trip to sort trip logistics, meet Kowakan staff, collect equipment and food, learn basic paddling and safety skills and make final preparations before venturing into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (the BWCAW). Groups will return to Kowakan at the end of a trip to return gear and share their stories.
Individual groups, families and individuals:
Kowakan is also an ideal location for youth groups, families and individuals seeking a quiet, primitive wilderness setting for personal use. While staying at Kowakan groups and individuals can look to Kowakan staff for support, equipment rentals and program or logistical leadership for day trips to places of interest near Ely or into the BWCAW.
